Relaxation was a prerequisite for spectators to view this life style of pleasure and excitement. The local Z-Boys (abbr.Zephyr surfing team) rode and defended their turf at the Dogtown arena.
When I think of the term "Dogtown" I'm reminded of the surfers and skateboarders that I had associated with at the "Cove," located south of P.O.P. (a former amusement park) on the boarder line between Venice and Santa Monica. There have been many references to the nature of Dogtown as to mis-stereotyping the locals as gang members due to the fact that they surfed at the Cove. The name "The Cove" came about by the way the sub-aquatic surface floor was shaped which formed perfect waves to ride. The Pier pilings were responsible for creating that unusual surface. The local surfers would defend the Cove by stating with spray-can graffiti "for locals only" and to not enter Dogtown.a name that someone coined to illustrate and discourage others that it is a dog-Pit fighting area and if non-locals enter they should become aware of any consequences that may arise.
"Dogtown" was not actually a geographic location but rather carried a reputation of being a self-respecting state of mind.
